OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Dave Slavinski and Elizabeth Waterstraat captured overall titles Saturday at the USA Triathlon Long Course National Championship, held at Lake Hefner in conjunction with the Redman Triathlon.
Slavinski (Point Pleasant, N.J.) placed second at the event in 2011 and cruised to victory this year by finishing the 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike, 13.1-mile run in 4 hours, 7 minutes, 19 seconds, which was 16 minutes faster than the next closest competitor.
Slavinski, who races in the 40-44 age group, also claimed the Masters title. In a close race to round out the podium, Stephan Schwarze (Austin, Texas) took second in 4:23:30.24, just edging out Thomas Woods (Lincoln, Neb.), who was also in the 40-44 age group and finished with a time of 4:23:30.64.
Waterstraat (Naperville, Ill.) also had a strong lead on the rest of the women’s field and logged a time of 4:48:16 — 9 minutes ahead of the next closest female finisher and good for the 37th-fastest time overall. Jennifer Harrison (West Dundee, Ill.) grabbed the Masters title, finishing second on the women’s side in 4:57:37, and Monica Robbers (Arlington, Va.) took third, crossing the finish line in 5:03:04.
In addition to earning national titles, the top 20 athletes in each age group (rolling down to 25th place) earned a spot on Team USA for the 2013 ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships, which will be held in Belfort, France, in June 2013. Visit usatriathlon.org for more information on Team USA.
The event action continues Sunday with the USA Triathlon Club National Championship, based on finishes in the long course event, as well as aquabike events, a full-distance triathlon and Sunday’s Olympic- and sprint-distance races. National titles will be awarded to clubs in five categories based on size. Results will be posted on usatriathlon.org on Sunday.
