Broderick Clinches Second-Place Finish at PATCO Championships
Juniors Jenks, Knibb finish second, third for podium
DALLAS — Jessica Broderick earned her second-straight podium finish today at the PATCO Triathlon Pan American Championships, while junior triathletes Stephanie Jenks and Taylor Knibb finished second and third in the PATCO Junior Championships.
Broderick (Boulder, Colo.) posted her best career finish on the 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike, 10-kilometer run course in Dallas, crossing the line in 1 hour, 59 minutes, 51 seconds, 10 seconds behind race winner Adriana Barraza of Mexico, who also claimed the Under-23 title with her winning time of 1:59:41. Anahi Leon, also of Mexico, rounded out the podium in 2:00:08. Broderick was fifth out of the water behind Americans Summer Cook (Thornton, Colo.), Taylor Spivey (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Lauren Brandon (Dallas, Texas). By the second lap of the bike, Broderick had connected with the lead pack and moved herself into the top position by the end of the first lap of the run. Over the 10k run course, Broderick and eventual winner Barraza shifted positions a few times, but on the final lap, Barraza took the lead on the final corner to take the tape. “I would say I was pretty aggressive at the start of the run and I think that I may have been a bit too risky,” said Broderick, who also finished second at the Chengdu ITU World Cup in China three weeks ago. “I definitely felt it at the end, but that’s racing. I really wanted to lay it out there. In China I was more conservative at the start of the run, so I wanted to try something different. I’m really happy with the result.” In the men’s race, Hunter Kemper (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was the top American finisher, just missing the podium with a fourth-place finish in 1:47:58 in his first ITU race of 2014. Mexico’s Crisanto Grajales earned the win, running strong despite rising temperatures to post a time of 1:47:09. Brazil’s Diogo Sclebin took second in 1:47:43, and Mexico’s Irving Perez was third in 1:47:53. William Huffman (Colleyville, Texas) was fifth overall in 1:48:14 and captured the U23 title for the men. The junior races kicked off the draft-legal championship racing on Saturday, with Americans Jenks (Aurora, Iowa) and Knibb (Washington, D.C.) claiming podium finishes. Mexico’s Vanesa De La Torre ran through the field to win the 750m swim, 20k bike, 5k run event in 1:01:16. Knibb came out of the water in second, and quickly established herself as the fastest cyclist on the course. Though De La Torre and Jenks whittled away at a more than 90 second lead, Knibb held on to finish on the podium in 1:01:41. Jenks had the second fastest run and finished in 1:01:25. Eli Hemming (Kiowa, Colo.) was the top U.S. junior finisher for the men, taking fifth in 55:37. Brazilian Manoel Messias was the winner in the junior men’s race in 55:09. Jeremy Briand of Canada was second in 55:19 and Mexico’s Eduardo Israel Lamas Hernandez was third in 55:30. The 2014 PATCO Championships will continue Sunday with the paratriathlon events, and nearly 70 elite paratriathletes are expected to compete.
