Two new world records at the 10th Challenge Roth
This has never happened before in any triathlon event around the world: With a new world record both in the men’s and in the women’s competition the Challenge Roth will definitely go down in triathlon history. What often has been referred to as the “myth of Roth” has now got a new meaning.
After an interruption of only one week, the men’s world record is back where it belongs: in Roth.
In his first race in Roth, Andreas Raelert put up an excellent fight and won the race in a fabulous finishing time of 7:41:33 hours, so he was more than four minutes faster than Marino Vanhoenacker from Belgium, who had only seven days to enjoy his Klagenfurt record. Before, Roth had held the world record for 14 years (7:50:27 – Luc van Lierde 1997) and has now won it back in superior style.
And triple Hawaii winner Chrissie Wellington put the icing on the cake of this world sensation: She won the Challenge Roth for the third time in a row – and again in a new world record time. The world’s best female triathlete was able to beat her own last year’s record of 8:19:13 by exactly one minute and crossed the finish line in precisely 8:18:13 hours. And what is even more unbelievable: Wellington finished the race as fifth in the overall ranking, so she now can proudly state that she is among the “top 5 male athletes”. 34-year-old Wellington led the race from start to finish. She is just in excellent shape and the only one who seems to be able to beat her is herself.
In the men’s competition vice world champion and European champion Andreas Raelert took the lead already at the beginning of the bike race, and his victory was hardly in danger from that moment. At some point, Sebastian Kienle was able to get quite close to him, but he had to slow down soon enough. So like last year he came in second. With his excellent finishing time of 7:57:06 he remained under the magic eight-hour limit, which might have been some kind of comfort for him. Keegan Williams from New Zealand came in third in 8:16:01.
After Chrissie Wellington’s finish, the 180.000 spectators had to wait quite a long time for the second and third place female finishers. Young German rookie Julia Wagner was able to make her dream come true as she finished second in 8:56:23 hours, followed by Australian Rebekah Keat in 8:59:22. With temperatures about 25 degrees, a mixture of sunny weather and some clouds, and just a little bit of wind, the weather conditions at the 10th Challenge Roth were quite perfect. And the athletes’ sensational and outstanding performance was a wonderful birthday present for the organizers of the event.
